Message from Father Langan, February 26-27:

February 26-27

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In a few days, we begin the holy season of Lent.   It is not so much that the days of Lent itself is “holy” but rather that we ourselves may grow in holiness by what we do throughout the 40 Days.  During Lent, we reflect on the grace of God always available to us.  That is where holiness begins.  On our part, it is a matter of cooperation with that Divine grace.  The extent of our cooperation with grace effects our holiness and that holiness is simply to be more like Christ Our Lord.  Recently in our daily Scripture readings, Our Lord admonishes His disciples who were unable to cast out a demon to be more diligent in prayer and fasting.  These two disciplines along with works of charity or almsgiving are our prescription for a fruitful Lent.  In the Dominican tradition, (which I highly recommend), study of the Sacred Scriptures is indeed a prayerful means by which our prayer life grows and flourishes.  Did not St. Jerome remind us that “ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

Beginning on Tuesday, March 8 at 7 PM in Holy Family Hall, we shall conduct our Bible study entitled “The Bible and the Church Fathers”.  We shall meet weekly on Tuesdays with the exception of Holy Week and resume following Easter until completion.  During this series, you will learn WHO the early Church Fathers were how very important they are for the growth of the Church and how they shaped the way we read Sacred Scripture.  You will learn how the Bible took form, the powerful tools for reading it, and come to understand in indivisible relationship between Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and the Seven Sacraments.

The study consists of a video (in person during our meetings or streaming for those who cannot attend in person) and a workbook (cost $25).  Each participant should have a workbook for taking notes, reading assignments and review and discussion questions.  Please call the parish office to reserve your workbook ASAP and to register for the study.

During Lent, beginning on March 6, we shall have Sung Vespers in St John’s Church beginning at 4 pm.  During that time we will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, time for quite prayer and meditation and conclude with Benediction by 5 pm.  Remember that Stations of the Cross will be offered on Fridays:  11:20 AM and 7:00 PM in St Mary Magdalen, 6:00 PM at St. Bernard’s, and 5:30 PM St. Joseph’s,

Presently two women are preparing for entrance into the Church on the Easter Vigil,  Christine and LeeAnn.  Let us accompany them with our prayers and loving support.

A Blessed Lent,

Father Langan
